Our Role in the SYIoT

We are excited to be part of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology (SYIoT), which connects experienced education providers with top employers. The Institutes of Technology (IoTs) across England work together to deliver world-class technical education and training, ensuring students are equipped for the evolving job market.

What is the SYIoT?

Backed by over £16 million in funding from the Department for Education, the SYIoT is a significant investment in higher-level technical education. As one of 21 IoTs nationally, it highlights the importance of high-quality education to meet regional skills needs and supports the growth of the local workforce.

Education Partners and Facilities

The SYIoT brings together education partners such as DN Colleges Group, Sheffield Hallam University, and Barnsley College to offer cutting-edge facilities. The Barnsley College University Centre, located at the Church Street campus has been refurbished to provide higher-level technical education in Construction, Digital and Engineering.

Transforming education

In a wonderful story spanning 92 years, our Church Street campus – formerly Barnsley Mining and Technical College – has been sensitively transformed into a modern, technology-rich IoT to retain and enhance the classic architecture inside and out complemented with the latest innovations in construction and technology.

GF Tomlinson are the main contractor for the project, with construction commencing in May 2024. Consultants AECOM are a key partner supporting the College’s Major Projects Team as lead Technical Advisers through the construction phase.
