Successful College fundraiser for IDAS women’s refuge

Posted: 24/06/2025

In a collective College effort, £514 has been raised in support of IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services). The funds raised will contribute to the renovation and redevelopment of the IDAS garden at a women’s refuge, providing a safe haven for women and children who have experienced or are survivors of domestic abuse. The renovation project will be undertaken by Construction and Horticulture students during the upcoming academic year.

Leading the fundraising efforts, the Learning for Living and Work (LFLW) and Hair and Beauty departments organised a Beauty Treatments Fundraiser. During the event, Hair and Beauty students provided a range of 20-minute services, priced at £5 each. The services offered included a relaxing hand and arm massages, nail filing and polishing, and Mehndi (Henna) designs, which raised £373 in total.

Megan Warren, a member of staff, who booked a service, said: "Big thanks to the amazing beauty students for taking part in the fundraiser!
“My nail file and polish and relaxing hand and arm massage were the perfect lunchtime treat—and all for a great cause. The students made it a lovely experience!"

Reflecting on the event, Casey Hargreaves, a Level 2 Hair and Beauty student, who offered nail and henna services, added: “I found the event really good. I offered nail and hand care (aftercare). I enjoyed bonding with clients and speaking to them about henna. I was very excited about supporting a good cause.”

In another fundraising event, staff from the LFLW and Human Resources departments hosted ‘The Big Barnsley College Charity Staff Lunchtime Staff Quiz!’, which raised £141. Teams of staff members participated in a lively general knowledge quiz, with the Learning for Living and Work team emerging victorious.

IDAS representatives attended both events to extend advice and support to individuals or those concerned about someone in need. Additionally, raffle prizes, ranging from beauty hampers to beauty treatment gift vouchers, were awarded at both events.

Nicola Thomson-Dewey, Head of the Learning for Living and Work department and IDAS ambassador at Barnsley College, said: “We are incredibly proud of the collective effort and dedication shown by our students and staff. The funds raised will make a significant difference in the lives of those who seek refuge and support at IDAS.”
