Student supplements success

Posted: 21/05/2025

A skilled student from Barnsley College University Centre is transforming his enthusiasm for the gym into a business venture after obtaining £200 in funding through the College’s enterprise programmes.

Michael Robinson, who studies Criminology, Communities and Criminal Justice Foundation Degree, has been a personal trainer for over a decade and found the supplement industry lacking in personality.

JUNKYARD, launching in October 2025 will offer a range of supplements designed to support physical and mental wellbeing, all aimed at fostering a healthier, happier lifestyles.

Michael received £200 support from Barnsley College Futurepreneurs (BC Futurepreneurs), after a series of entrepreneurial challenges that help young innovators access funding and develop their business ideas.

Michael said: “The University Centre gave me the time and environment to think creatively. I saw an opportunity to create a brand that spoke directly to people like me - driven, creative, and loves training.

“Futurepreneurs was exactly what I needed. It gave me clarity, direction, and a solid support system. I had the vision and the passion—but Futurepreneurs helped me shape that into a business plan, refine my messaging, and think strategically. It also gave me the confidence to treat JUNKYARD like a real brand from the start, not just an idea.”

The main motive of this brand is to help people who want to endorse a healthy lifestyle and give the best of themselves but also want to be part of a growing community with similar interests.

Michael continued: “Right now, I want to nail the core products and build a loyal customer base. After that, it’s about expanding into related areas—maybe some apparel and branded training gear. The goal is to create a brand that feels like more than just supplements - a community people want to be part of.

“College and the University Centre have been a huge part of my journey. From practical support through Futurepreneurs to the encouragement I’ve had from staff and peers, it’s helped me turn a dream into an actual business. Having access to that kind of environment while building JUNKYARD has made a massive difference.”
