Shaping a future in ceramics: Scarlett’s story

Art and Design Foundation Diploma student, Scarlett Bradwell

Scarlett Bradwell is using the Level 3 Art and Design Foundation Diploma to solidify her passion, build her confidence, and take the next step towards an art degree.

After completing the Level 3 Art and Design Extended Diploma at the College, Scarlett chose to stay on for another year, to extend her knowledge with the Foundation Art Diploma in Fine Art. A course designed to prepare learners for higher education in art and design, enhancing critical thinking and independence.

“I want to go to uni next year, and this course will get me the grade I want. It’s helped me develop further and pursue ceramics.”

Focused on ceramics

Scarlett discovered a real passion for ceramics during her time on the course, something she credits to both the facilities and her tutor, Moz, a professional ceramicist.

“This year the focus has been ceramics and having Moz as a tutor has been a big help. He’s got his own career in ceramics, which makes a big difference in his teaching. He teaches you about the important parts of being a ceramicist and what the career actually involves.”

She describes the ceramics studio as “university-level standard,” which has prepared her well for her next step in applying to study at Leeds Arts University.

Confidence through opportunity

The course has not only strengthened Scarlett’s creative confidence, it has also given her opportunities to gain real-world experience. She took part in a live brief with the Cooper Gallery, where she reached the final three in a competitive process to design an artwork for the Barnsley Bright Nights event.

“I thought that was a really good exposure for the students.

“I got into the final three, so I actually went to the Cooper Gallery, and had the interview and presented my idea to the panel, which I thought that was pretty significant.”

While she didn’t win, she describes the experience as a great opportunity and something she’s proud to share with others.

A bright future

Looking to the future, Scarlett hopes to one day combine her love of ceramics with teaching and possibly even running her own creative business.

“I think I’ll aim to go into higher education teaching. I’m also interested in the business side of things, like the connection between artists and galleries and sharing work.”

A course that builds confidence

For students who are unsure about what’s next or need time to boost their UCAS points, Scarlett believes the Foundation Art Diploma offers the perfect opportunity to regroup and grow.

“If you struggled with your previous course, and you didn't get the grade and you're feeling a bit shaky. I think this course is a great booster if you're wanting to continue in education and get that grade.”

“And if you're just trying to figure out where you're going really, because I wasn't sure about ceramics, but now I've done this year I feel pretty developed in it, and I'm confident to do it now at University level.”
