Posted: 07/07/2025
Selma Mufundisi is making a powerful impact across campus through her leadership, advocacy, and dedication to creating a more inclusive College community.
A Level 3 Business student, Selma has embraced multiple roles this year, including serving as the Minorities Officer for the Students’ Union and becoming the College’s Racial Justice Commissioner.
Through these positions, she has worked passionately to represent underrepresented voices, challenge inequality, and encourage open, meaningful conversations among students and staff.
Selma has been at the forefront of organising key awareness events alongside the College’s Enterprise team, such as Black History Month, Show Racism the Red Card, and Barnsley College Week of Culture. These events have created spaces for students to learn, reflect, and celebrate diverse experiences and perspectives.
Beyond events, Selma has been an active contributor to life at the College, taking part in staff interviews, Governors’ Seminars, Curriculum Forums, and external groups. She has also volunteered with the national organisation ‘Racial Justice Commissioners’.
Selma, who was awarded the Student Voice Representative Award at the Excellence Awards this year, said: “I want every student to feel they belong and that they matter; that’s what drives me to keep going and keep speaking up.”
Sasha Foyster, Learner Voice Adviser within Student Services at the College, added: “Selma is always the first to say yes to a challenge and gives her all to make sure every student’s voice is heard, especially those who are often underrepresented.
“Her ability to lead with purpose, advocate for change, and bring students together makes her a true role model. She is a respected and valued member of the College community, helping to shape a more open, inclusive, and supportive environment for everyone.”
