Embracing Change and Upskilling in IT
With over 30 years of experience in IT, Nick Turfrey knows firsthand how quickly technology evolves, and how important it is to keep skills current. “In IT, the skills you learn can quickly become outdated. If you don’t keep up, you risk becoming less relevant in the job market,” Nick explains.
A chance meeting with the team at Barnsley College University Centre, and a conversation with Danny Wright, introduced Nick to HN Flex Computing. “I discovered real-world, up-to-date skills in areas like Cyber Security and Networking. My experience gave me a foundation, but HN Flex helped me refine my knowledge and develop new skills that are in demand today.”
Building Confidence and Practical Skills
Nick highlights the personal growth he experienced: “The biggest change for me was a boost in confidence. I developed practical skills like time management, accepting feedback, and collaborating in groups. The course environment encouraged everyone to contribute, and I realised the value I could bring.”
Initially, Nick felt apprehensive about returning to study as a mature learner. “It wasn’t easy at first. I didn’t always feel like I belonged. But the support from lecturers and classmates helped me adapt. I became more visible, more useful, and learned that communication is as much about listening as it is about speaking.”
Achievements and Next Steps
Nick’s dedication paid off: “I achieved distinctions and earned UCAS points, which enabled me to progress to study Computer Science at university. The support from lecturers—some younger than me—was invaluable. They took the time to listen and discuss opportunities.”
He also found respect and camaraderie among his peers: “My group respected me not just as an older student, but as Nick. Sharing achievements with classmates who became friends was incredibly rewarding. The course increased my skills, employability, and confidence.”
A New Career Path
After working for a large IT provider in Reading, Nick sought to update his skills for new opportunities. “I visited Barnsley College University Centre to explore how I could upskill. The Information Unit team, including Jo Maskill, guided me to the right place. Meeting Danny Wright was pivotal. It gave me a renewed sense of purpose.”
Nick’s journey didn’t stop at the classroom. He secured summer work at Pearson in Rotherham, gained confidence in reaching out for new opportunities, and now works for ADMAC Consultancy. “I’m attending Chamber of Commerce events and networking locally. I have no fear of new technologies now.”
Recommendation
Would Nick recommend HN Flex? “Absolutely. For individuals and employers looking to upskill, HN Flex helped me realise my potential. The support, practical skills, and confidence I gained have set me up for future success.”
