Barnsley FC opens its doors to students who want a different route into work
Barnsley College and Barnsley FC are teaming up to launch hands-on courses at Oakwell aimed at young people who haven't found the classroom the right fit.
Oakwell Stadium will be awash with the trademark red of both Barnsley College and the Super Reds when Barnsley face Cambridge United on Saturday 17 October. The takeover will showcase a partnership that will help students develop their skills and gain real-world experience in the careers that sit behind the scenes at a professional football club.
As part of the partnership, Barnsley College and Barnsley FC are developing new courses in subject areas such as Hospitality and Catering, Media and Marketing, and Business, with a strong focus on practical learning and employability skills that will see students take their first step into the world of work.
The courses will be designed to offer a different route for young people who may benefit from a more hands-on alternative to traditional classroom-based learning.
Students will be encouraged to explore areas across the club, gaining work experience and learning about all the work that goes into running the Reds, both on matchdays and beyond.
The partnership responds to a recognised need locally and nationally to create more flexible routes into education, training, and employment for young people.
Latest Department for Education figures show that 3.1% of 16 and 17-year-olds in Barnsley were estimated to be not in education, employment or training, based on data from the end of 2025 and start of 2026.
By combining practical learning with meaningful work experience, Barnsley College and Barnsley FC aim to give young people another route into education that helps build their confidence, develop employability skills, and progress.
The courses will be run through the club’s newly founded Skills and Innovation centre within the corner stand of the stadium, allowing students to study in an environment that is different to a normal classroom.
Barnsley College Principal and Chief Executive Officer, David Akeroyd, said: “Barnsley Football Club is a huge part of our town, and our community, and both the club and Barnsley College share a proud commitment to giving local people opportunities to thrive.
“For our students, this is a chance to learn and build their confidence at a club that means so much to their families, friends, and neighbours.
“This partnership will give them the chance to see the club from a different perspective, discover the range of careers behind the scenes and put their skills into practice.
“Working alongside the club’s staff will help students build confidence, understand what employers expect, and make connections that can support their next steps.”
Jon Flatman, Chief Executive Officer of Barnsley Football Club, said: “The club are very proud to announce a formal memorandum of understanding with Barnsley College. These courses will provide opportunities for local people to upskill and find employment.
"The club are proud to partner with the key anchor institution of Barnsley College, who we know are a leading light in the diversity of quality, meaningful education.”
