Course content
Explore the principles of healthy eating: Explore what a healthy diet is and how the diet affects health. Examine various lifestyle diseases, the role different nutrients play in assisting how your body functions and learn how to plan a healthy meal and prepare food safely.
Consider the nutritional needs of a variety of individuals: Explore how nutritional needs alter with age from children up to older people, looking specifically at dietary requirements for these demographics. Additionally, learn the factors that create barriers to a healthy lifestyle.
Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet: Develop an awareness of food labels and how this can be used to plan healthier meals and encourage a healthier diet. Explore the advantages and disadvantages of food additives and evaluate your own diet.
The principles of weight management: Explore the risks associated with ineffective weight management and how to implement effective methods of weight management. Look at how societal demands for a particular body image can negatively influence weight management and how to plan a short-term weight management programme that works for you.
Understanding eating disorders: Study different eating disorders and their effect on health and well-being. Explore the complex connection between food and feelings and how to access information and support in relation to eating disorders.
Principles of food safety for the home environment: Learn how to implement food safety in a safe environment, avoid contamination and identify hazards. As well as develop an understanding of the importance of personal hygiene when handling food.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.
If you are aged 16 - 19 and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which maybe added to your study programme, subject to approval from your chosen department.
If you're aged 19 or above and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
