It is ideal for aspiring designers, career changers, or those looking to progress within the creative sector.

What you will study

Throughout the course, you will build a broad range of graphic design knowledge and practical skills, developed through research, independent study, guided projects and real-world creative scenarios. You will explore core design principles while developing the professional behaviours and transferable skills employers value, including communication, teamwork, research, problem-solving and critical analysis.

By the end of Level 4, you will have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of graphic design and be confident using subject-specific skills relevant to key areas of the industry, preparing you for further study or entry-level creative roles.

Course modules

The HNC in Graphic Design consists of two core modules:

Concept and Development

This module focuses on developing your creative practice through exploration of graphic design concepts, ideas and processes. You will examine the history, theories and contemporary developments within graphic design, while building the technical knowledge and skills needed to support your creative work.

Creative Project

This module allows you to apply your skills and knowledge to a substantial design project. You will respond to a creative brief, manage your own workflow and present a resolved body of work, reflecting professional graphic design practice.

A wide range of teaching and learning methods are used to support different learning styles and encourage independent thinking. These include:

  • Lectures and seminars
  • Practical workshops and demonstrations
  • Tutor-led and student-led discussions
