Allergy Awareness Level 2 Certificate Part-time (ITS)
Develop your understanding of allergies, allergens and intolerances, and learn how to respond effectively if someone experiences an allergic reaction. This qualification provides practical knowledge that can be applied in a range of settings, including childcare, adult social care, service sector roles and other environments where people may be affected by allergies.
Throughout the course, you will explore different types of allergens, how allergies and intolerances can affect people, the importance of accurate food labelling and packaging, how to recognise allergic reactions, how to reduce risk, and how to provide an appropriate first aid response in the event of a severe reaction.
The course is designed to help you develop the knowledge and confidence to support safer environments and manage allergy-related situations appropriately in your workplace or chosen sector:
Working with children: Suitable if you work in childcare or another setting where you are responsible for children’s safety and wellbeing.
Adult health and social care: Suitable if you work in adult social care or a care-related setting where allergy awareness can help promote safe and effective care practice.
Service sector: Suitable if you work in a customer-facing or service-focused role, including environments where food, customer care or public service delivery may be involved.
This course is suitable for adults aged 19 and over who currently work in, or would like to work in, a role where allergy awareness is important. It may be useful for people working with children, in adult health and social care, in the service sector, or in other customer-facing or care-focused environments. It is also suitable for employers looking for allergy awareness training for staff.
Course content
The course is made up of three main units:
Allergens, allergies and intolerances: You will develop background knowledge of allergies, allergens and intolerances, including how they may be diagnosed, treated and managed.
Food labelling and packaging: You will explore how to read different types of food labels, why accurate label reading is important, the regulations surrounding food labelling, and how to recognise when a label may be incorrect.
Allergy awareness in practice: You will understand how allergy awareness applies in different settings, including working with children, adult health and social care, and service sector roles. This includes recognising signs and symptoms of allergic reactions, knowing how to respond in an emergency, and reducing the risk of allergic reactions through approaches such as avoidance, safe food preparation and medical ID jewellery.
Unit 1: Allergens, allergies and intolerances
Discover the background knowledge behind allergies, allergens and intolerances and gain an understanding of how allergies and intolerances are diagnosed and treated.
Unit 2: Food labelling and packaging
Explore the different types of food labels and the importance of accurate label reading in keeping those with allergies safe. Discover the regulations surrounding food labelling and develop an ability to recognise when a label is incorrect.
Unit 3: Allergy awareness for those working in adult health and social care
Learn key information on allergen awareness for those working in adult health and social care roles. Discover how to recognise the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions on different body parts and how to perform first aid on those who have experienced a severe reaction. Learn how to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction through methods such as avoidance, food preparation and medical ID jewellery.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.
If you are aged 16 - 19 and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which maybe added to your study programme, subject to approval from your chosen department.
If you're aged 19 or above and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
