The Access to Higher Education (HE) Land-based Studies Diploma is an exciting and intensive Level 3 programme designed for adults who want to progress into Higher Education within the land-based, animal, environmental or biological sciences. The course provides a fast-track route for individuals who may not have traditional qualifications but are highly motivated to pursue careers in areas such as animal management, agriculture, ecology and countryside management.

Throughout the programme, you will develop strong academic, transferable and practical skills that prepare you for university-level study. You will explore a range of biological, environmental and animal-related subjects, supported by tutors and high quality learning environments. Practical learning is enhanced through access to specialist facilities including a working farm, institute of technology and land based resources, helping you build confidence and real world experience.

This course is ideal for adults looking for a career change, those returning to education, or those who have a passion for the natural world and want to advance their academic ambitions. On completion, you will gain a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification accepted by universities across the UK and carrying UCAS tariff points. If you are ready to take the next step toward a future in the land-based, animal or environmental sectors, this programme provides the perfect foundation.

Course content

The Access to HE Land-based Studies Diploma comprises 60 credits, including 45 graded Level 3 academic credits and 15 ungraded Level 2 or 3 credits.

You will study:

  • Animal Behaviour and Welfare: This unit develops understanding of intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing animal behaviour, welfare indicators, enrichment, behavioural monitoring and the application of welfare legislation. It provides learners with the knowledge required for roles in animal care, welfare assessment and behavioural management.

  • Animal Accommodation: You will gain insight into the design, suitability and legal requirements of accommodation for a range of species. Topics include environmental parameters, hygiene, safety standards and the impact of housing on animal wellbeing.

  • Farm Animal Husbandry: This module introduces the principles of livestock management, including production systems, handling, routine husbandry procedures, health monitoring and welfare considerations. Practical knowledge supports progression into agricultural and veterinary related HE pathways.

  • Food Production: You will explore biological principles underpinning food production, including systems of cultivation, food chains, sustainability and the scientific considerations that influence modern food systems. This supports progression into subjects such as agriculture, horticulture and environmental sciences.

  • Animal Health and Disease: This unit covers causes, signs, transmission and prevention of common diseases. Learners study immunity, pathogens, and contemporary health management strategies used within animal related industries — an essential foundation for veterinary nursing, animal science and zoology degrees.

  • Animal Biology and Nutrition: These combined study areas introduce principles of digestion, nutrient functions, feeding strategies, biological systems and the structure and function of key organs. You build essential biological understanding required for higher study in animal science, zoology or veterinary nursing.

  • Principles of Ecology and Conservation: You will investigate ecological relationships, environmental pressures, conservation strategies and sustainable management approaches. This develops awareness of global ecological challenges and supports progression into environmental science, conservation biology and ecology degrees.

  • Research Project: An independent project where you plan, carry out and evaluate an investigatory study linked to your interests within animal, environmental or land-based disciplines. This develops core research skills required for Higher Education, such as data collection, analysis, critical interpretation and academic writing.

  • Academic Skills: All students complete this mandatory unit, which develops essential academic competencies such as referencing, note taking, reading strategies, planning written assignments and preparing for higher level study. It ensures you gain the confidence and transferable skills needed for HE success.
