Access To Higher Education: Computing Level 3 Full-time

The Access to Higher Education (HE) Computing Diploma allows you to undertake study related to Computing and is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification designed to prepare you for progression to university-level study in Computing and related fields. It offers a structured, supportive route for those returning to education or looking to change career direction, providing the academic knowledge, technical understanding and study skills needed for success at Higher Education (HE).

Throughout the course, you will explore key areas such as software development, networks, cybersecurity, mathematics for computing, and emerging technologies, ensuring a strong foundation in both theory and applied practice. The diploma develops essential academic competencies, including research, analytical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication—skills highly valued at university and within the digital sector.

This qualification supports students from a wide range of backgrounds, including those without traditional academic routes into HE. Successful completion provides a pathway into degrees such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cyber Security, Network Engineering and other computing related disciplines.

Course content

The course is made up of various units that will run independently and combined throughout the year. Pathways have been chosen to best suit a wide range of computing areas that each student will undertake and complete.

All units are currently subject to curriculum changes due to an update of specification being made. Examples of units can be found below.

  • Mathematics for Computing

  • Research Project for IT - Methodology

  • Preparation for Higher Education

This is a full-time course. Lessons are 12 hours per week for 36 weeks.

Course Fees and Funding

How much does the course cost?

£3,384. It can be funded through the Student Advance Loan. Please note if you are aged 19-23 and this is your first full Level 3 course you may be entitled to full funding and will not need to take out a loan.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 - 19 and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards achieving a higher grade in English and Maths, we can help you do that too and we offer Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which maybe added to your study programme, subject to approval from your chosen department.

If you're aged 19 or above and don't hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths we can help. We offer FREE English and Maths qualifications that can be studied on a part-time basis, subject to eligibility.
