Busting the Myths About Higher Education

Think university isn’t for you? Think again.

Myth: “I can’t afford the tuition fees.”

Fact: Our full-time course fees are just £6,995 per year – significantly lower than many universities. Plus, student loans are available, and you don’t pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,000 per year. Myth: “I don’t have time to study alongside work and family.”

Fact: We know our students often juggle work, family, and other commitments alongside their studies. That’s why we offer both full-time and part-time options on many of our courses.

  • Full-time courses: Classes are held 2–3 days per week.
  • Part-time courses: Classes are held 1–2 days per week.

We also offer HN Flex - a new study option allowing you to undertake selected modules of a university-level course on an individual basis.

 

Myth: “It’s been too long since I studied.”

Fact: Our courses are designed with support in mind. From study skills workshops to one-to-one help, we’ll support you every step of the way. We also offer a Disability and Dyslexia Service (DDS) and a Library which is packed with resources to help you whilst your study.

Fact: You’ll study in our newly renovated University Centre, part of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology, with state-of-the-art facilities.

Backed by more than £16m funding from the Department for Education, South Yorkshire is one of 21 IoTs nationally, kite-marking our state-of-the-art provision that is co-designed and delivered with employers.

Specialising in Higher Technical Qualifications, professional training, degree level study and Higher Apprenticeships, the SYIoT offers courses, qualifications and bite-size programmes, giving individuals access to flexible Higher Education.

 

Myth: "I don't have the the right qualifications to study a Higher Education course."

Fact: At Barnsley College we offer a range of Access to HE courses designed for those returning to education. These diplomas will equip you with the confidence and skills needed to succeed at university-level. Visit: www.barnsley.ac.uk/access for further details.
